California Labor Law Requirement: Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
On January 1, 2019, a new law went into effect in the State of California requiring all employers with at least five employees to provide interactive sexual harassment prevention training to their employees and supervisors before January 1, 2020, and then once every two years.
“Interactive training” is defined as (a) a live training event, (b) a live webinar, or (c) an “interactive E-learning” arrangement. E-learning must allow for trainees to ask and receive answers (from an expert) within two days.More Information
(Your Stated Clerk is not a lawyer, so more specific questions should be directed to the State website or a labor attorney).
In order to help our congregations fulfill this requirement, the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii is hosting a Sexual Misconduct Prevention Workshop led by Kibbie Ruth of Kyros Ministry this coming September. It will be held in three separate locations on three separate days. You are welcome to attend any one of the three dates (all 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, lunch provided):
Thursday, September 5:
Union Church of Los Angeles, 401 E 3rd St., Los Angeles, CA 90013
Translation available in Spanish, Korean, Taiwanese, Mandarin, and Arabic
Friday, September 6:
Shepherd’s Grove Presbyterian Church, 4445 Alton Parkway, Irvine, CA 92604
Translation available in Vietnamese, Korean, Taiwanese, and Indonesian
Saturday, September 7:
Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 588 Camino Manzanas, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360
Translation available in Spanish and Korean
Cost is $15 for ministers and $10 for others.Flyer
Please note: This workshop will also satisfy the presbytery’s requirement for pastors’ sexual misconduct prevention training. The presbytery does not currently have plans to address its requirement or the state law in some other way. We are directing our common effort with neighboring presbyteries in the Synod toward this opportunity.
