A Christmas Prayer

True Light

Creator of light
and light thyself,
shine on us this day.

Birth in us the mystery of Eden
where gladness and trust ran free.
And make us new in Christ again,
living holy lives for thee.

Then help us shout for joy,
surprised by love so great,
the riches of your glory,
found in boundless grace.

No scepter ever needed,
no whip swung in hate,
just a balm for care and sadness
that makes the crooked straight.

So we shall bow at manger’s trough
and see true light revealed,
your sovereign care and gentleness
making all creation new.

For this we say, “We praise you,”
but no praise could ever pay,
as much as one’s life lived for you,
so live through us we pray.

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:3-4).

What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1:4-5)

The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light has dawned” (Matthew 4:16).
