Church of Amazing Grace International Plans for August Conference

by | Jul 18, 2022 | News

Kasisi Johnson Kĩriakũ wa Kĩnyua, pastor of Church of Amazing Grace (CAGI), a New Worshiping Community of the Presbytery of Los Ranchos, shared the news that the church will be hosting its first international conference August 26th – 29th. He also invites members of the presbytery to consider hosting the conference’s Kenyan attendees.

Vision and Mission

He writes, “You might have come across my motto borrowed from Frederick Buechner, ‘The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.’ I have found this place at CAGI.

Our vision at CAGI is to build an enduringly strong and vibrant African Christian community, together. We reach out to African students and immigrant families living in Southern California. As we invite, we strive to make CAGI a place to belong, a place to share one’s gifts, a place where all are valued and celebrated. One of the ways we have actualized this (in the pre-COVID days) is to hold [an] annual thanksgiving ceremony for the years God has graciously guided us as a community of faith.”

Genesis of the Conference

“It is in the same spirit that we have decided to hold a 3-day annual convention and conference from August 26 – 29, 2022. We are expecting participants from Kenya and around USA. It is a first of its kind for CAGI. The bulk of those attending from Kenya are from the session and membership of PCEA [the Presbyterian Church of East Africa] St. Andrews Church, Nairobi.

After the weekend convention, the plan is to have a one-day conference / luncheon for the guests to interact and share with Americans as well as Kenyans living in diaspora with the hope of discussing possible partnership strategies.”

The ultimate hope for the conference is to build “deeper relationships and lasting connections and deeper commitments to the Mission of the church.”

An Opportunity for Members of the Presbytery

Rev. Kĩnyua invites us to pray for the convention – for the planners, the leaders, the participants, and for traveling mercies particularly for those coming from Kenya.

Hosts Needed for Our Kenyan Siblings

CAGI members will be hosting Kenyan guests in their homes; and the church is seeking additional hosts for guests arriving on August 19th and departing on August 31st. Guests include couples and single young adults. Hosts are asked to provide lodging for twelve nights and transportation to and from Morningside Presbyterian Church on the days of the conference. A few pre-conference activities including sightseeing are being planned by CAGI; guests and their hosts are invited to make plans for the free days. Hosts are not expected to provide meals, but snacks and beverages are always appreciated.  Hosts are welcome to attend the conference, but are not expected to do so. They will be invited to attend the closing lunch on Monday, August 31st, at the Kĩnyua home in Lake Elsinore.
