Advent is all about waiting! At the time of Jesus’ birth, God’s covenant people, the Israelites, were waiting for the promised Messiah. Many had given up on God, but some, like Mary the mother of Jesus, lived in hopeful waiting.
We, too, know the pain of acute waiting: the childless couple for a child, the chronically ill for health or death, the waiting of the emotionally scarred for peace, the waiting of men and women in dead-end careers for a breakthrough, those in unhappy marriages for relief or redemption or escape, for children to get through this difficult stage, and the waiting of the lonely to belong.
Our Advent Mini-Retreat in Newport Beach provides opportunities for discovering the gifts that are often hidden in the waiting places in our lives. “Second only to suffering, waiting may be the greatest teacher and trainer in godliness, maturity, and genuine spirituality most of us ever encounter”. Richard Hendrix
