Saturday, September 8th, 10 AM – 4 PM
St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach
Roger Dermody, Deputy Director of our Presbyterian Mission Agency, will be with us to share the vision of the 1001 New Worshiping Communities. Hopefully you’ve seen the videos and heard the witness of those works featured at General Assembly.
Several of those works are here in Southern California. The 1001 has raised awareness, excitement, and many questions – not the least of which is: “How do we begin a new worshiping community?” Another common question is: “What is the definition of a new worshiping community?”
Along with Roger there will be presentations from 5 new works, all in different stages of development.
1. 20-30 Somethings
San Clemente Presbyterian Church
2. Veritas – Young Adults
Irvine Presbyterian Church
3. NorthEast of the Well – a unique urban outreach
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church
4. NorthLAnd Village Church – an urban work that focuses on reconciliation
5. UrbanLife San Diego – a great work that is transforming the City Heights community in San Diego from the inside out.
The purpose of all these presentations is to spark the imaginations and conversations of those who come to the event on the 8th.
We will also be video recording this event so the stories told can be shared beyond the day. Each presentation is limited to 15 minutes as intended to focus on the beginnings of their work. This will be followed by table talk for people to reflect on what they are hearing and what it says to their context. We are encouraging everyone to bring a group from their presbytery/church/friends so they can consider this together. At the end of the day we will have given people the chance to decide on “next steps” that they will take to begin a new work. We hope this event will be one of many catalytic opportunities in the coming months.
Please visit our presbyinnovate website. We are working to create a portal for resources available to help in the 1001 efforts.
